Safety boat presentation

District 1190 to the rescue.

At a ceremony on Friday 30th August on the shores of Lake Bassenthwaite David Simpson, District Governor of Rotary District 1190 from 2012-2013, christened and presented a new rescue boat to the Calvert Trust. In his year of office as District Governor David's chosen charity was the Calvert Trust.
The Trust is a charity that helps change the lives of people with even the most profound physical, sensory and learning disabilities along with their friends and families. It has been providing facilities for over 30 years with pioneering equipment adaptations and specially trained
instructional staff. Among the many courses on offer are sailing and canoeing.
In consultation with the Trust it was clear that at the top of their wish list was a new rescue/safety boat for use during all water activities. The boat would cost in the region of 20,000. Rotary Clubs rose to the challenge and raised the money.
The boat "The Raisley Calvert" is a Pioneer multi with a plastic hull and so is extremely durable. The drop down bow makes it different to most other boats. It can be used to rescue immobile people from the water easily and quickly.
In his speech David thanked Rotary members for supporting his chosen charity and for raising the money to purchase the boat. He praised the work of the Trust and its remarkable achievements in building self-esteem, motivation and independence. Sean Day, the Trust Centre Director, responded by thanking David and Rotary for its generous support and emphasising how much needed the new boat was and how it would play an essential role in water activities. Sean explained that it was Families Week and he pointed out some small sailing boats out on the lake with families in them one of whom was a disabled person.
The current District Governor of Rotary, Kevin Walsh, was present plus many Rotarians representing Rotary Clubs from Lancashire and Cumbria and the President of the Lunesdale Club, Gordon Downing -Stewart and his wife Anita.
Also present were the Mayor and Mayoress of Allerdale Bill and Valerie Bacon, the Mayor of Keswick Martin Pugmire, MP Tony Cunningham and Robin Burgess Chair of The Calvert Trust. To find out more about the Calvert Trust go to www.calvert-trust.org.uk .
