The Triple Crown

Triple Crowner Jim Bispham Visits the Club
On 9th April Jim was introduced to members at the meeting and warmly welcomed by President Peter Irving. The subject of the presentation was "The Appalachian Trail". Jim began the 2,100 mile trek on 12th March 2014 and finished on 17th July 2014 on the summit of Mt Katahdin on his 60th birthday. A former milkman from Kendal Jim told his audience how he had hiked the Pacific Crest Trail on the west coast of the USA in 2008, and hiked The Continental Divide in 2011/12. With all 3 huge hikes completed he had walked an incredible total of almost 8,000 miles and so earned the coveted title of Triple Crowner which only 194 hikers have been awarded by the American Long Distance Hikers Association. Much of the AT hike in the beginning was walked in extremely cold conditions often through deep snow. There were periods of incessant rain and times of tremendous heat. Having enough water was a concern at times. There were several occasions when total strangers provided food, transport and accommodation for him. Despite the incredible hardships Jim proved that he had the necessary resilience, determination and staying power to complete the challenge of the trail. All 3 hikes were an unforgettable and unique experience. Many friends were made during his 3 remarkable journeys.
The Club is very grateful to have Jim to lead the 13 mile walk in the :-
"Lune Walk 4 UR Local Charity" event on Sunday 7th June which is being organised by the club.
