Max Simon

Max Returns To Medicina, 70 Years On.

Max Simon (Captain Retired) of the 14/20th Royal Hussars is one of only 2 surviving veterans who fought in the Battle of Medicina, on 16th April 1945. The Hussars fought alongside Gurkhas from the 6th Gurkha Rifles. The Regimental Association Club invited Max to take part in the 70th Anniversary Commemoration of the battle held in the town of Medina. It proved to be a very special occasion.  Max laid a wreath at The Cross of Sacrifice in the British War Graves Commission Cemetery of Faenza with other Veterans present. There was a parade through the town and an official reception.

Members of the Rotary Club, wives, partners, family and friends attended the meeting on 28th May when Max gave an illustrated talk about his WW1 battle experience and his visit to Medicina for the 70th anniversary and Commemoration.

It was a privilege to share his memories.

The painting below is by Terence Cuneo and captures the ferocity of the battle.

The 6th Queen Elizabeth’s Own Gurkha Rifles own this painting and kindly gave their permission to use it.

There is an excellent description of the Battle here
