The Vicar of the Moon

Astronauts, Space Flights and Moon Landings

On Thursday 10th March the speaker was Rev Ken Clapham who has lived and worked at Over Kellet for 32 years. Ken told how he wrote to The Lyndon B Johnson Space Centre at Houston,Texas to invite Jim Irwin ( the 8th man to walk on the moon) to visit the local school at Over Kellet to talk to the children. Whilst on a visit to the UK Jim came to the school with just 3 weeks notice! It was to be the start of an ongoing friendship. Ken was invited to visit the Space Centre at a later date where he met many other astronauts including Neil Armstrong who was mission  Commander of Apollo 11 and the first man to walk on the moon who famously said "that's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind".  Buzz Aldrin who flew with Neil Armstrong on that historic mission and was the 2nd man to land on the moon and  Charlie Duke the 10th man. We learned something about the personalities of these men and how the space missions affected them and their families. Stress levels were extremely high especially during actual flights when the huge question was would they return safely. We were shown interesting photographs and autographed items which have become part of space exploration history.
