A Ton of Pencils

The Rotary Club of Lunesdale was delighted to have the opportunity to provide the charity, Mary's Meals with a ton of pencils. Peter Irving and Lilian Barton, 2 Lunesdale club members, travelled to Workington to collect the pencils. The Cumberland Pencil Company, for the second year running ,have kindly donated millions of reject pencils which must be distributed to schools abroad. The Derwent Recycling company is kindly providing warehouse storage for the pencils and Ken Kirkwood of the Rotary Club of Workington is managing the job of distribution of 5 million pencils. To date pencils have been shipped to 43 countries around the world. With the pencils loaded Peter and Lilian travelled on to Mary's Meals warehouse in Glasgow where willing volunteers helped unload the ton of pencils. They will be shipped out in a container to Mary's Meals, Blantyre, Malawi early in May. From there they will be given to the many schools and Under Six Centres in Malawi which participate in and benefit daily from the Mary's Meals feeding programme.
